📖 Background
Why change the status quo: Collapse of the political system: politicians avoid making fateful decisions for the people of Israel (constitution, security law), lack of trust in politicians, elections every two years, absence of a civil mechanism to change politicians' decisions which leads to violent protests, hatred between sectors, etc.
📝 Proposal text
What needs to be changed: A referendum can be scheduled on fateful issues for the people of Israel with the approval of an absolute majority of Knesset members (61 MKs or more), and the decision will be made with the approval of a majority of referendum participants.
Purpose of the change: Politicians must relate to the "will of the people" to participate in fateful decisions related to the majority of Israeli citizens. Making decisions without "approval of the people" leads to severe harm to democracy and the future of the State of Israel.
Example of a topic for a referendum: Do you agree to a ceasefire with a terror organization whose founding principles state "the destruction of the people of Israel"?
✅ For (1)
- + Decisions of heavy objective weight for the people of Israel must be made through a referendum.
⚠️ Against (1)
- − Decisions must be made through a competent political authority and sometimes must be made within an immediate timeframe with sensitive and confidential information that does not allow for a referendum.
